Sports Chiropractic Benefits: What Does It Address?

A sports chiropractor helps with the underlying mechanical problems that keep you sidelined from your active lifestyle, like injuries or delayed recovery.

Benefits of chiropractic for athletes include:

  • Athletic Performance: Train harder and recover faster through proper biomechanics
  • Injury Prevention: Maintain alignment to distribute stress correctly during activity
  • Old Athletic Injuries: Correct structural problems from your playing days limiting performance now
  • Lower Back Pain: Address misalignments making lifting, running, or sitting uncomfortable
  • Neck and Shoulder Issues: Relieve nerve compression from repetitive contact sports
  • Recovery and Mobility: Eliminate morning stiffness and restricted range of motion

Research demonstrates that chiropractic treatment improving athletic performance produces measurable results, with athletes showing significant increases in grip strength and functional capacity.

Real Results for Real Georgia Athletes

Our approach delivers measurable improvements, not vague promises about feeling better.

Here are just a few examples of what proper structural correction and biomechanical expertise actually looks like in practice:

Back

Ultra-Endurance Performance

One of our runners came in with massive bone spurs and complete degeneration in his lower back. He couldn’t even function normally. After addressing the structural issues, he’s back to running 50- to 100-mile ultramarathons at an elite level most people half his age couldn’t touch.

No Insurance

Youth Performance Enhancement

A high-level pitcher came to us throwing 80-90 mph fastballs but struggling with frozen shoulder. After one month of care with shockwave therapy, he added four miles per hour to his fastball — the difference between college ball and getting recruited by scouts.

Family Plans

Return to Competition

Multiple marathon runners have told us they’re “running the best I’ve ever ran” after completing care. Not just pain-free, but posting personal records they thought were behind them when structural problems are corrected.

90% Success Rate

With a 90% success rate across all types of athletes, we don’t just help you get back to your sport. A chiropractor for sport injury prevention helps you perform better than you did before the injury stopped you.

When Should You Seek Sports Chiropractic Care?

Minor discomfort may resolve on its own, but certain warning signs indicate you need a sports injury chiropractor evaluation to rule out any long-term complications. Most active adults minimize these symptoms until one day it’s not okay anymore:

  • Declining Workout Performance: Watching someone half your age outperform you, or can’t lift as heavy without pain
  • Recurring Episodes: Several “really bad” episodes over the years managed with muscle relaxers that keep returning
  • Morning Issues: Waking up stiff and unrested, struggling to put on socks, or needing time to “warm up”
  • Can’t Sit Comfortably: Your desk job is increasingly uncomfortable and you’re constantly adjusting to find relief
  • Activity Modifications: Skipping exercises you love or “being real careful” because certain movements trigger pain
  • Fear of Re-Injury: Constantly thinking “am I getting to the point where my dad was?” about giving up activities

Many issues we see in gym injuries and sports recovery have been building from playing sports as kids. Ignoring them only compounds the damage.

What to Expect From Your First Visit

Wondering what your sports chiropractic appointment will be like? We’ve got you covered:

w

1. Listen First

Your comprehensive evaluation starts with understanding your complete athletic history: what injuries you’ve had, what you’ve tried, and what your goals are. We’ll spend time focused entirely on your specific situation, whether you’re a runner dealing with knee pain or a tennis player recovering from shoulder injuries.

2. Find the Root Cause

Drs. Jake & Kat personally perform your examination using on-site x-rays and motion studies to evaluate what’s happening with your spine. We look at the exact structural misalignments, degeneration, and mechanical issues causing your symptoms (the foundation for effective sports injury rehabilitation).

3. Your Custom Plan

We review what we found and explain how these structural shifts affect your body’s ability to perform and recover. If we can help with sports chiropractic adjustments, shockwave therapy, or laser therapy, we’ll create your personalized care plan with a clear timeline. If not, we’ll refer you to someone who can.

About Drs. Jake & Kat Wilson

Drs. Jacob Wilson and Katherine Wilson

Chiropractors

Professional head shot of Drs. Jacob Wilson and Katherine Wilson, chiropractors at Wilson Family Chiropractic in Dunwoody, GA

Dr. Jake Wilson knows firsthand what it’s like to deal with debilitating sports injuries. At 16, he wrapped his car around a tree in a near-fatal accident that required the jaws of life to extract him. He recovered from the initial trauma, but soon developed excruciating headaches every time he took a hit in football.

Fearing something was seriously wrong, he heard a chiropractor speak at his school about how spinal injuries affect the nervous system and cause symptoms throughout the body. After starting chiropractic care, his headaches completely disappeared, and that experience changed the trajectory of his life.

Now with 16 years of clinical experience, Dr. Jake specializes in helping athletes avoid the pain and limitations he once faced. As a former college football and wrestling athlete, he understands the physical demands of competition and the frustration of injuries that won’t heal properly.

Joined by his wife Dr. Katherine Wilson, they’ve built Wilson Family Chiropractic into one of Dunwoody’s most trusted sports chiropractic practices, treating professional players in the NFL and MLB, as well as college athletes at University of Georgia and other highly-regarded institutions.

As parents of three kids, Jake & Kat are raising athletes at home, too. Their son William competes at an elite national level in soccer, giving them real-world insight into the pressures and physical demands facing young athletes today.

Specialized Sports Chiropractic Services

We offer specialized treatments beyond traditional adjustments to address chronic sports injuries and support young athletes.

Shockwave Therapy

Our FDA-approved focused shockwave therapy treats chronic tendon issues and soft tissue injuries that traditional methods struggle to. Unlike physical therapy offices where technicians operate the equipment, a chiropractor personally administers every shockwave session. Expertise in application makes the difference between results and wasted time.

We successfully treat plantar fasciitis, frozen shoulder, TMJ dysfunction, and chronic tendon injuries with targeted 3-6 session protocols. Combine with laser therapy to address injuries at the cellular level to accelerate healing.

Youth Sports Chiropractic

Specialization in youth sports has created an epidemic of overuse injuries. We’re seeing Tommy John surgeries in 12-year-olds and frozen shoulders in teenage pitchers. Injuries that used to show up at 28 years old now appear at 13.

As parents raising three kids ourselves, we understand the pressure young athletes face and the importance of keeping them healthy in the game. Our youth athlete treatment options focus on injury prevention, performance optimization, and addressing the structural issues building before they become career-ending problems.

Don't Let Another Day Go By Living With Sports Injuries

Whether you’ve dealt with recurring pain for months or years, sports chiropractic therapy restores your body’s natural ability to heal and perform at its best.

Our Dunwoody patients are already pain-free and back to their activities, isn’t it time you joined them?

Your Common Sports Chiropractic Questions, Answered

How long does healing actually take with sports chiropractic?

True healing takes time, typically 12 to 18 months for soft tissue to fully heal. Most athletes think healing happens when pain goes away, but that’s just the first step. Professional athletes have recurring injuries because they’re never allowed to properly heal, and the same principle applies to weekend warriors pushing through pain.

That’s why our sports rehabilitation chiropractic focuses on getting you to maximum benefit—the point where you’re as good as we can get you—and then maintaining it so you don’t mess it all up again.

Why do my old high school injuries keep bothering me now?

Your body has been building on structural problems since your athletic years, and those issues compound over time. When you’re young, your body compensates incredibly well. You might have sprained an ankle, injured your shoulder playing football, or took repeated hits, but you bounced back quickly with minimal intervention.

The problem is those injuries created structural shifts and scar tissue that altered how your spine and joints move. Over 20 or 30 years, improper distribution of stress throughout your spine leads to advanced degeneration and arthritis, even in men in their 30s and 40s. You’re not old, but your spine might look like it belongs to a 70-year-old because of accumulated damage from your athletic years.

What's the difference between your sports chiropractic approach and just getting pain relief?

Most chiropractors focus on temporary pain relief, meaning you feel better for a while but the underlying problem remains. We meet you where you’re at. If you want symptom relief, we can help with that. But our athletic chiropractor approach addresses the structural cause so you don’t keep having the same problem.

Think of it like a bike chain. If you’re riding with a rusty chain, you’re more likely to have issues and things are more likely to break. When your bike chain is well-oiled and moving smoothly, it’s mechanically more sound.

Your spine works the same way. We remove what we call intersegmental fixations that cause improper stress distribution. When your spine moves correctly through proper athletic spinal alignment, you’re less injured in the first place.

I can still work out and do most things, do I really need treatment?

This is exactly how most of our patients think before things get serious. You’re minimizing it because that’s what athletes do; we push through.

But here’s the reality: we’ve seen countless good guys, family men, who kept pushing until one day it wasn’t okay anymore. They’d come in, feel better, quit coming, and repeat that cycle. Then we’d get a call that they had back surgery. And it didn’t go well.

The guy with the six-pack who looks completely healthy? His x-rays often show the spine of a 70-year-old because of years of accumulated damage from his athletic years.

You can function while building toward a serious problem. Most patients do for decades. The question isn’t whether you can push through it. The question is whether you want to minimize yourself into the situation you don’t want to be in. We see patients in their 30s and 40s with advanced degeneration who thought they were fine until they weren’t.

Can sports chiropractic actually improve my athletic performance, or just fix injuries?

Absolutely. We have countless examples of patients not only recovering but actually improving their performance with chiropractic for athletic performance. One ultra-marathoner has massive bone spurs and complete degeneration in his lower back; he couldn’t even function. Now he’s out running 50 to 100-mile races again.

Multiple studies show that athletes under chiropractic care have measurable improvements in their abilities. It’s not just about sports injury treatment, it’s about optimizing how your body moves.

What if I've tried chiropractic before and it didn't work?

The key difference is whether you received structural correction or just symptom management. Many chiropractors will adjust you, you feel better temporarily, and then the problem comes back. That’s because the underlying structural issue was never addressed.

We use on-site x-rays and motion studies to see exactly what’s wrong with your spine, not just where it hurts. This diagnostic approach lets us correct the structural problems causing recurring issues.

We also use multiple treatment techniques including manual adjustments, instrument-assisted methods, and focused shockwave therapy for chronic tendon issues and sprains and strains. Our expertise in biomechanics means we’re addressing the mechanical cause, not just adjusting your back and hoping for the best.
